چکیده

We study social learning in a continuous action space experiment. Subjects, acting in sequence, state their belief about the value of a good, after observing their predecessors' statements and a private signal. We compare the behavior in the laboratory with the Perfect Bayesian Equilibrium prediction and the predictions of bounded rationality models of decision making: the redundancy of information neglect model and the overcon dence model. The results of our experiment are in line with the predictions of the overcon dence model and at odds with the others'.

An Unlucky Feeling: Persistent Overestimation of Absolute Performance with Noisy Feedback

How does overconfidence arise and persist in the face of experience and feedback? We examine experimentally how individuals’ beliefs about their absolute, as opposed to relative, performance on a quiz react to noisy, but unbiased, feedback. Participants believe themselves to have received ‘unlucky’ feedback and they overestimate their own scores, but they exhibit no overconfidence in non-ego-re...

Overconfidence and Social Signalling

Evidence from both psychology and economics indicates that individuals give statements that appear to overestimate their ability compared to that of others. We test three theories that predict such relative overconfidence. The first theory argues that overconfidence can be generated by Bayesian updating from a common prior and truthful statements if individuals do not know their true type. The ...

How repeated studying and testing affects multimedia learning: Evidence for adaptation to task demands

Two biases can occur in multimedia learning: overconfidence and over-reliance on text processing. The present research sought to identify these biases and to investigate whether they can be reduced, and hence learning fostered, when studying and testing are repeated. In 2 experiments (Exp.1: N 1⁄4 79, Exp.2: N 1⁄4 52), students learned either with text only or with text and pictures (multimedia...

Overconfidence and Informational Cascades∗

This paper combines behavioral economics and social learning. Overconfident agents overweigh their private information relative to the public information revealed by the decisions of others. Therefore, when following a herd, they broadcast more of the information available to them. However, overconfidence trades the additional information revealed by overconfident decisions against more informa...

Mode Transition and Change in Variable Use in Perceptual Learning

Runeson, Juslin, and Olsson (2000) proposed (a) that perceptual learning entails a transition from an inferential to a direct-perceptual mode of apprehension, and (b) that relative confidence—the difference between estimated and actual performance—indicates whether apprehension is inferential or direct. In 3 experiments participants received feedback on judgments of force; the results replicate...
